XP Power Introduces 20W Board Mounted AC-DC Power Supply With Low Profile

March 12, 2009 by Jeff Shepard

XP Power announced the ECP20 series of compact, low profile 20W ac-dc power supplies that are suitable for low power PCB-mounted applications. Measuring just 2.64 x 1.57 x 0.73 inches (67 x 40 x 18.6mm), delivering a power density of 6.6W per cubic inch, and what is described as a class leading efficiency of up to 87%, the units are well suited for designs where space is at a premium. The series comprises a total of 11 models; 8 single output and 3 dual output versions. Single output units cover the nominal voltages of 3.3, 5, 9, 12, 24, 30 or 48 Vdc. Dual output models provide +/- 12, +/- 15 or +/- 24 Vdc.

With a low no-load power consumption of < 0.3W, the ECP20 can assist in meeting the requirements of low standby power consumption applications and several energy saving initiatives such as Energy Star and EISA. The units are also well suited for applications requiring a short duration of higher output power. All models have a peak load capability that can provide 130% of rated output power for a maximum of 30 seconds. In this way, design engineers need not specify a more expensive, higher wattage power supply just to accommodate such short peak load conditions.

The ECP20 series can operate across a wide range of temperatures, from 0 to + 50°C without derating and up to + 70°C with derating. No additional heat sinking or forced air flow is required for the power supplies to deliver its full power capability. The series has a Class II input, meaning that no grounding is required, so suits portable equipment designs, or where a reliable ground source is not always available. External filtering components are not required since the power supplies already meet EN55022, level B for conducted and radiated EMC. All models carry the internationally recognised EN and UL safety approvals.

The ECP20 single output version is priced $25.74 for OEM quantities.
