Turbo Switchers Debuts TD-000 MOSFET/IGBT

September 24, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Turbo Switchers (Cape Town, South Africa) introduced the TD-000, the first of its new Turbodriver line of 5V powered MOSFET/IGBT resonant gate drivers. The TD-000 is a single-channel, non-inverting driver that operates from a 5V supply, but drives the MOSFET gate between -10V/+15V, and extremely fast switching times are obtained.

The TD-000 utilizes a patent-pending topology that employs resonant transitions using less than half the power of a conventional driver topology. It can drive power MOSFETs with variable frequency and duty cycle from 20kHz to over 3MHz. When operating from a 5V supply, the TD-000 can drive a power MOSFET with a user-selectable voltage swing (dependent on the gate inductance) of up to +24V to -19V, being limited to this level by internal zener diodes.

The TD-000 features short propagation delays of typically 10ns, has 4.4µF of decoupling capacitance on-board, and can source or sink a current of up to 8.5A into large capacitive loads. The gate charging/discharging current is a half-sinusoidal pulse with the peak current occurring when the gate voltage is going through the MOSFETs threshold linear region (switching region).

The TD-000 is available in a 10-pin SIL package at $5 each in 100-piece quantities. Samples can be ordered at $35 per pair, including shipping.
