TDK Introduces Choke Coil for Boost DC-DC Converers

October 31, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

TDK Corp. announced the development of a small choke coil for dc-dc converters of portable devices such as smart phones and digital cameras. According to the company, for a choke coil of its size, the CPL1608 series is the most efficient in the industry at limiting power loss, helping prolong the operation of battery-powered products.

The dc-dc converter changes the power supply voltage to the proper voltage for a device’s circuit-board components. The choke coil is built into the dc-dc converter to reduce power supply noise and improve performance.

The CPL1608 has a modified coil structure that subjects the metal of the electrodes to a magnetic field, which works to prevent power loss due to heat conversion. DC-DC converters made using the new coil have an electricity conversion efficiency of up to 83%, which is three to five percentage points higher than normal. The CPL1608 choke coil is in the standard 1608 size – 1.6 x 0.8 x 0.95mm.

TDK has already established a process for mass production and plans to make the coils at a rate of 3 million units a month.

Samples are priced at 100 yen (US$0.12) each.
