Taiyo Yuden Intros PAM250 Switch-Mode Power Supply

New Products Sep 02, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Taiyo Yuden USA Inc. (Schaumburg, IL) introduced the PAM250, the second model in its new PAM Series of passive PFC-based, switch-mode power supplies for 1U-height, single-output, medical OEM applications. Like its 150 W companion model (PAM150), the PAM250 provides economic benefits to OEMs through use of passive versus active PFC technology.

The PAM250 switcher meets all Class A PFC requirements, and provides reliability and high mean time between failure through use of fewer components. The relative cost per watt of a passive PFC switcher like the PAM250 is significantly less than a comparable switch-mode power supply employing active PFC techniques. The PAM250’s universal 115 Vac/230 Vac input is complemented by a single 250 W continuous power output with a single factory-set 12 V, 24 V or 48 V output range.

Current-sharing capability for 1+1 redundancy with no special interconnection requirement is offered as an option, as are remote on/off, and droop or single-wire current sharing with OR-ing diodes. The standard unit provides heat dissipation, but may be ordered with an optional fan with its own 12 Vdc supply. Other standard features include dc "OK"; ac power fail; and protection against overload, over-voltage, reverse voltage and thermal conditions.

The switcher measures 7 in x 4 in x 1.5 in, and comes with a two-year warranty. Pricing for the PAM250 is under $75 each in OEM quantities. Available now, delivery is stock to eight weeks ARO.
