Semtech Unveils SC2453 Quad-Output Regulator IC

February 18, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Semtech Corp. (Camarillo, CA) announced a high-performance, programmable, quad-output, switching regulator suitable for the power market's trend toward multiple outputs and lower voltages. The new SC2453 regulator offers a small size, cost-savings, a wide input-voltage range, a high-current output and a rich array of features.

The SC2453 device, packaged in a tiny TSSOP-28, combines two low-voltage dropout (LDO) regulators and two synchronous, voltage-mode, buck switching regulators. The SC2453's input voltage can range from 4.5V to 30V, encompassing 5V, 12V and 24V power supply buses, or any bus within the 4.5V to 30V range. The SC2453's output can go as low as 0.5V and supply up to 20A through external MOSFETs.

Other features and benefits of the SC2453 include a programmable switching frequency of up to 700kHz; power-up sequencing; over-current protection with adjustable current limit; fast transient response; bootstrapping for high-side MOSFETs; soft-start operation; and a power-good output signal. Two switching regulators, designed to drive n-channel MOSFETs, are synchronized to avoid beat frequencies, while fixing the switching frequency to one value simplifies filtering and EMI suppression.

Production volumes of the SC2453 regulator in a 28-pin TSSOP are available now. Pricing is $2.48 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
