Semtech Announces Availability of the SC1408 Power-Management Solution

January 09, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Semtech Corp. (Newbury Park, CA) recently announced the availability of the SC1408, the latest addition to the company's line of power-management solutions for portable applications. The SC1408 has an input range of 1.8V to 16.5V, and is designed to be used with a wide range of battery chemistries and voltages. The device can be used in boost applications requiring up to 3A, and can also be utilized in SEPIC topology for applications where the input voltage could be higher or lower than the output voltage. Semtech claims a typical application would be to generate a regulated 3.3V output from a single lithium-ion battery with an input range of 2.7V to 4.2V.

The SC1408 consumes a typical 110uA in normal operation, and less than 2uA (typical) under shutdown. Operation up to 300kHz allows use of small surface-mount components, thereby contributing to a small total-solution size. The controller is designed to lower the frequency at light loads to improve efficiency. The SC1408 provides a fixed 5V output, or the output can be adjusted over a 3V to 16.5V range with a resistor divider.

Evaluation samples of the SC1408 are currently available in SO-8 packaging, and full production units will be available in February 2000. In quantities of 1,000, pricing for the device is $1.24 each.
