PowerSight CAT IV Power Monitors Feature Bluetooth to PC/PDA Interface

June 07, 2009 by Jeff Shepard

A new line of PowerSight™ power, energy, and power quality instruments from Summit Technology features a CAT IV rating (600V/8000V) and integral Bluetooth™ communications. The PowerSight PS2500, PS3500 and PS4500 handheld units facilitate wireless operation of the units from either a PC or PDA. Using PowerSight Manager software installed on a PC or PDA, the operator can view waveforms, take waveform snapshots and save data, all while working at a safe distance from the meter and without the need for NFPA 70E-prescribed safety gear.

The latest revision of NFPA 70E requires that personal protective equipment (PPE) be worn as appropriate to the shock and arc flash hazard severity at specified voltage and energy levels. Workers must be attired in protective clothing when they are working on or near live voltages, which involves cumbersome suits, thick gloves, hoods or visors. The Bluetooth wireless communication offered in the new PowerSight units provides the best safety experience by allowing the user to remove the visor and gloves and safely operate the meter at a distance up to 20 feet away using a PC or PDA.

"The use of any power monitoring instrument, whether for energy audits, power quality studies, or simple data logging, involves the issue of safety," said Michael Daish, of Summit Technology. "The new PowerSight handheld units offer our customers a choice of cost-effective instruments, all with the combination of CAT IV rating plus wireless communication that combines safety and convenience."

The base price for the units are: $1,495 – PS2500 Power Logger; $2,495 – PS3500 Power Analyzer; $4,995 – PS4500 Power Quality Analyzer. Delivery is off the shelf to two weeks ARO.
