January 20, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Phihong has developed a 2.75W adapter that is the smallest low-cost USB charger available, at just 2.29 by 1.69 by .83 inches. The PSM03A is compliant with the new, more stringent ENERGY STAR® External Power Supply (EPS) Version 2.0 requirement as well as the United States’ Federal Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) and the 5-Star Standby Power standard. The USB charger’s small size makes it well suited for wireless communications, peripherals, networking, and portable and mobile equipment.

"Energy efficiency standards are increasing in importance for all electronics equipment, including personal and mobile devices, for which USB chargers are standard accessories," said Keith Hopwood, Vice President of Marketing for Phihong USA. "Standards compliance is a vital consideration in our design of new products, and the PSM03A adapter is a direct response to the mobile phone industry’s directive in the 5-Star Standby Power standard."

Designed with applications such as MP3 players, PDAs, digital cameras and mobile phones in mind, the PSM03A provides a fully regulated 5Vdc output and a maximum no-load power consumption of <0.03W.

The charger features short-circuit protection, over-current protection, and over-voltage protection, and is rated to operate between 0 and 45°C and between 10% and 90% humidity. Additionally, the adapter bears cUL/UL safety approvals. The PSM03A USB charger measures 2.29 x 1.69 x 0.83" and weighs 3 ounces.

The suggested unit price for the PSM03A adapter is $2.77 each in 1k-piece quantities.
