MGE UPS Systems Announces New Features to Galaxy 3000 UPS

May 14, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

MGE UPS Systems (Costa Mesa, CA) has introduced new features to its Galaxy 3000 UPS. The online three-phase UPS offers scalable power protection from 10 to 30kVA and utilizes MGE's ultra-high availability topology to ensure that all critical loads are protected. The Galaxy 3000 supports 10 to 40 network servers.

To increase battery efficiency, the Galaxy 3000 now incorporates a new battery-testing module that the company claims increases UPS reliability and extends battery life. Through automated load testing of the batteries, the Galaxy 3000 can determine battery performance issues before they affect the UPS's backup time. This battery management function also conducts a pulse-charging algorithm that MGE maintains can extend battery life up to 50 percent.

In addition, this new management system can perform predictive failure analysis of the batteries. Also new to the Galaxy 3000 is a load-surge stabilization feature designed to combat the high surge currents experienced when switch-mode power supplies and/or distribution transformers are first powered up.

MGE claims that the Galaxy 3000 uses advanced inverter technology to restrict total harmonic distortion to less than 3 percent. In addition, the Galaxy 3000 incorporates fault-tolerant circuitry that protects the UPS from accidental short circuits usually caused by mis-wiring. The UPS interfaces with the industry's leading universal communication protocols and incorporates four communication slots to support SNMP, J-Bus/ModBus and (RS232-RS485) protocols.

Using MGE's Solution-Pac power management software, the Galaxy 3000 can control and shutdown multiple servers over a network. Together with an available USB port, the Galaxy 3000 provides Windows 2000 compatibility with Solution-Pac software. The software can also monitor and control the UPS remotely. A multi-lingual color LCD graphical display offers measurements and diagnostic messages as well as animated mimic diagrams. In addition, password protected personalization menus provide the ability to specify modes of operation, warning thresholds for battery operation, and other features to tailor the operation of the UPS for the site.

The Galaxy 3000 UPS is UL-1778 and cUL approved. It conforms to FCC Class A parts, 15 sub parts, and meets ISO 9001 design and manufacturing standards. It is currently available.
