September 05, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. (Japan) debuted a AA nickel-metal hydride battery, the Metal Hydride 1700 Series. Matsushita claims the new battery has the industry's highest capacity, with a large electric current for the same price as its existing models.

A set of four 1700 Series batteries is priced at 1,940 yen, and a set of two batteries at 1,080 yen. The batteries are for digital still cameras, portable audio devices and mobile game machines.

The battery's capacity is a minimum of 1,650mAh (1,720mAh standard), up 6.5 percent from the company's existing battery released in 2000. The battery can also discharge a current of 1,000mA to 1,500mA, enabling users to take about 18 percent more exposures with a digital still camera than those with the current batteries.
