Kollmorgen Announces Release of the Platinum DDL Servomotor

July 30, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Kollmorgen Corp. (Radford, VA) has announced the release of its new high-resolution sine encoder option for the Kollmorgen Platinum DDL (Direct Drive Linear) frameless permanent magnet brushless servomotor. Typical applications are inspection, pick-and-place machines, and gantry systems.

The new sine encoder provides position information to the drive in the form of analog sine/cosine signals. The drive then decodes the sine into a fine resolution to improve velocity control, repeatability, increase system stiffness and reduce position dither. Also, the sine encoder increases feedback accuracy to allow accurate positioning of the load.

The Kollmorgen Platinum DDL Series is matched with the Servostar digital amplifier family. A key benefit of the direct drive technology is the direct coupling of the linear motor to the load. This solution eliminates mechanical transmissions (such as ball/lead screws, belts/pulleys and gearboxes) and removes backlash, compliance and other problems associated with these transmissions.

Kollmorgen claims that the Platinum DDL provides higher throughput, better accuracy and zero maintenance. The motors are available in Ironcore (high force) and Ironless (low force). The motor series has continuous torque ratings from 60N to 15,625N (13.6lb-ft to 3513.0lb-ft).
