IR Intros Three IR2520D CFL Ballast Reference Designs

October 20, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier Corp. (IR, El Segundo, CA) announced three complete compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) ballast reference designs for the IR2520D. The reference designs are complete and proven solutions for CFL ballasts. The CFL ballast reference designs feature programmable run frequency and pre-heat time as well as safety and circuit protection functions such as low ac line, open filament and failure-to-strike.

The IR2520D features an adaptive zero-voltage switching control. During each half-bridge switching cycle, half-bridge voltage slews to the opposite rail during dead time. If the voltage has not completely slewed to the opposite rail so that there is zero voltage across the appropriate switch before turn-on, then the operating frequency is too close to resonance and the frequency increases.

The IR2520D reference designs are available immediately. Pricing for the IR2520D begins at $0.57 each for the IR2520DS in 100,000-piece quantities. The IRPLMB1E mini ballast for single 25 W CFL, European version with 230 Vac input, is priced at $125 each. The IRPLCFL5E CFL ballast for a 26 W/spiral lamp, 220 Vac input, is priced at $125 each. The IRPLCFL5U CFL ballast for a 26 W/spiral lamp, 120 Vac input, is priced at $125 each.
