BI Technologies’ Common Mode Chokes for CAN-Bus

New Products Mar 30, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

BI Technologies Magnetic Components Division recently developed a series of surface mount common mode chokes. Designated the HM67 Series, the devices have been approved for use by major automakers in their vehicles' bus and communication systems.

"The HM67 family is available in two sizes to fit the needs of automotive designers who are running short of space and still need to filter their CAN-BUS networks," said David Smolik, Director of Product Development for the TT electronics BI Technologies Magnetics Division.

"As bussed communication devices become more prevalent in automotive design, these space saving products will become even more critical to the design engineer."

The four-terminal HM67 Series chokes feature common-mode inductance values from 5.0µH to 4700µH (at 100kHz; 0.1V), with inductance leakage from 0.08µH to 2.80µH. Rated current for the devices ranges from 200mA to 1000mA, with dc resistance values ranging from 5.8mΩ to 403mΩ. Dielectric withstanding voltage is 300Vdc.

Operating temperature range for the HM67 Series chokes is -40°C to +125°C, with a maximum temperature rise rating of 40°C and a maximum ambient temperature of 85°C.

The common mode chokes are available in standard embossed tape and reel packaging. Available in 400- and 2000-unit capacity, a lead-free version is also obtainable for applications requiring RoHS compliance.

Typical pricing for the HM67 Series is approximately $0.59 to $0.75 depending on volume, with delivery from stock to 10 weeks.
