AVX Releases Improved BestCap Supercapacitors

December 20, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corp. (Myrtle Beach, SC) announces the newly improved BestCap electrochemical supercapacitor. The AVX BestCap now offers a variety of voltage options in a single package. Voltages in the standard ranges of 3.5V, 4.5V and 5.5V, along with custom ranges from 1.5V to 10V, are available.

Standard voltage specifications for BestCap are 3.5V, 4.5V and 5.5V with a capacitance of between 50 and 560 millifarads, ESR values of 25 to 230 milliohms, and a maximum leakage current for 5 to 40 microamps, depending on size. Package options are 28 x 17 x 2.9mm to 6.0mm and also 48 x 30 x 2.9mm to 6.0mm. Molding wall construction is 0.7mm.

AVX Product Manager Joe Rana comments, “The BestCap is unique in its ability to store several hundred times as much energy, on a weight and volume basis, as a conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitor while retaining its ability to deliver that energy at more than 10 times the discharge rate." He added, “The BestCap also provides a superior performance combination of high capacitance and low ESR per unit volume."

The BestCap is suitable for portable and battery-backed equipment. Additionally, it can be used in hybrid battery packs to reduce peak power on demand, and to extend battery life. Pricing is approximately $4.20 to $15.00, in 1,000-piece quantities, depending on voltage and size value. The device is currently available from stock to eight weeks.
