AVX Offers HV Ceramic Capacitors

AVX Corp. has developed RoHS-compliant medium-and high-voltage ceramic capacitors for high-current applications such as military, harsh environment power supplies, high-voltage coupling and dc-blocking.

For medium voltage (up to 500V), applications like input/output filtering in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS), the SK Series provides a robust solution that has been specially designed to handle high currents and is suitable for commercial SMPS applications.

In higher voltage systems (up to 5kV), the SV Series of high-voltage multi-layer ceramic (MLC) radial capacitors has a very high capacitance value in a very small case size, such as 1.2uF in the SV17 package. The capacitor also exhibits low equivalent series resistance at high frequencies and has low leakage characteristics. The unique design also offers a robust solution for today's demanding applications.

"The added advantage of both these capacitor families lies in a special internal design minimizing the electric field stresses within the MLC," said Craig Hunter, AVX Strategic Marketing Manager. "This results in a significant reduction of partial discharge activity within the dielectric and has a major impact on the long-term reliability of the product."

Both versions are offered in COG and X7R dieletrics with Z5U for the SK only. The capacitors are conformally coated with high insulation resistance, high dielectric strength epoxy that eliminates the possibility of arc flashover.

Pricing typically starts at $1.25 for small volumes for both the SK and SV series with a lead time of stock to 12 weeks.
