AVX I/O Connector for Portable Equipment

July 20, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corporation (Myrtle Beach, SC) has released the new standard 9257 series I/O connector system to specifically meet the dimensional constraints of portable electronic equipment. The design features a fixed SMT socket mounted on the PCB and housed within portable devices such as, handheld devices, industrial modules, cellular phones and medical electronics.

The reduced-size connector plug offers cable termination with options of single and double-sided contacts and single row (8 way) or dual row (16 way) plug connections. No latching is required due to the click design of the contacts, saving important PCB real estate and providing design engineers flexibility and versatility in structuring their PCB layouts. The standard SMT plug provides positive alignment and orientation of the plug and socket, ensuring a reliable and secure connection.

"With the decreasing dimensions of portable electronic devices, design engineers are facing incredible space constraints. We designed the 9257 I/O connector system with the specific intention of helping portable electronic engineers overcome these constraints by occupying less space on the printed circuit board, giving engineers more room to operate," said Tom Anderson, AVX Product marketing manager.

The socket connector houses 16 contacts in two rows on 1.25mm pitch with a 1amp per contact rating for 5,000 mating cycles. Pricing typically starts at $1.85 at 10,000 pieces with a lead-time of six to eight weeks.
