Absopulse Transportable Battery Charger Delivers 500W in Field Applications

May 15, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Absopulse Electronics Ltd. introduced its BCP 300-500 Series – a constant voltage/current battery charger designed for operation in military, marine, transportation, industrial plants, oilfields and other extreme environments. The charger utilizes what is claimed to be field-proven high frequency conversion topology to generate between 300 and 500W output power and up to 400Vdc. The input accepts 115 or 230Vac (±15%). A power factor corrected universal input and various dc inputs are available on request.

The BCP 300–500 is conformal coated, heavily ruggedized and housed in a water-proof top-loader case with a sturdy rubber over-moulded handle for easy use in the field. The case measures 17" x 10" x 13.5" and the entire unit weighs approximately 13 pounds/5.9 kilograms, depending on the model. It features a circular MIL-type connector for the battery cable and an IEC 320 ac-input receptacle.

This battery charger is natural convection cooled and rated for operation over a 0 to 50°C temperature range. Extended temperature ranges are available on request. Protection includes inrush current limiting, over-voltage protection, rectangular current limiting with short circuit protection, a self-resetting thermostat for thermal protection and battery reverse polarity protection. Battery temperature compensation (with a battery temperature sensor) to ensure optimum charging at various temperatures is available on request. Other options include indicators (such as an analog volt-and amp-meter to indicate charging status), battery equalize with timer and various alarm outputs.

Pricing for the BCP 300–500 Series varies depending on output power and options required. The 300W basic version is priced in the range of US$696 at quantities of 10.
