200mA and 1.2A LDOs Support up to 18V Inputs

New Products Jun 15, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

The new LDK320 and LDL212 complete STMicroelectronic's family of cost-effective LDOs, offering an optimal combination of low dropout voltage, low quiescent current and good dynamic performance at a favorable price. As a result of the wide input voltage operating range, as high as 18V, they can be used as post-regulators in consumer applications (TVs, STBs), home appliances and industrial control modules, or directly attached to medium voltage battery packs in laptops and other battery-operated equipment. The LDK320 is also available in a 0.5% high accuracy version.

The LDK320 is a low drop voltage regulator, which provides a maximum output current of 200 mA from an input voltage in the range of 2.5 V to 18 V, with a typical dropout voltage of 100 mV. It is stabilized with a ceramic capacitor on the output.

The very good dynamic characteristic of the LDK320, combined with low drop voltage and low quiescent current make it suitable for low power battery-powered applications. The enable logic control function allows the LDK320 to be in shutdown mode by consuming a total current lower than 1 μA. This device also includes short-circuit current limiting, thermal and SOA protections.

Key features of the LDK320 include: Input voltage from 2.5- to 18-V; Very low-dropout voltage (100mV typical at 100mA load); Low quiescent current (typically 60μA, and 1μA in off mode); High PSRR of 88 dB at 120 Hz; Low noise; Output voltage tolerance of ±2.0% at 25 degrees C; (±0.5% version available on request); Output current up to 200mA; Wide range of output voltages available on request: fixed from 1.2V to 12V with 100mV step and adjustable; Logic-controlled electronic shutdown; Compatible with ceramic capacitor COUT = 1μF; Current, SOA and thermal protections; Available in SOT23-5L and SOT-89 packages; and Temperature range: -40 to 125 degrees C.

The LDL212 provides 1.2A of maximum current from an input voltage range from 2.5V to 18V, with a typical dropout voltage of 350mV at 1.2A. The high power supply rejection ratio of 87dB at 120 Hz, and more than 40dB at 100 kHz, makes the LDL212 suitable for direct regulation in switched-mode power supplies and secondary linear regulation in dc-dc converters.

The LDL212 goes to shutdown mode due to the enable logic control function, reducing the total current consumption. The device also includes the current limit, SOA and thermal protections. The LDL212 has an operating temperature range of -40 to 125 degrees C and is offered in SO-8 batwing plastic micropackage, DFN6 (3x3) and DFN6 (2x2) packages.
