The components are placed into the paper tube surrounded by a bursting black powder charge. As the shell is launched, a fuse is ignited, burning into the shell. When it reaches the black powder, it ignites, causing the shell to burst. At the same time, a sparkler compound ignites and fills the sky with a shower of brightly burning stars.
A fireworks projectile’s trajectory is determined using fundamental two-dimensional kinematics principles. The projectile’s maximum altitude depends solely on the initial speed’s vertical component, assuming air resistance is negligible. The projectile's flight time governs the horizontal distance the display covers or how far it moves downrange.
Planning professional fireworks shows requires meticulous preparation, with computer software and simulation programs doing much of the work. Choreography tools like FWsim or ShowSim enable designers to digitally craft and preview their displays. These programs offer interactive 3D perspectives, allowing designers to visualize the show from different audience viewpoints and make adjustments as needed.

Before developing electronic match (e-match) systems, pyrotechnics were manually fired using switch panels. The process is highly automated today: script files can be exported directly to the firing system once a show is fully programmed. This technology ensures precise timing for each launch and explosion, resulting in safer and more accurately synchronized displays.
All this technology, planning, and pyrotechnics costs money. According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, display fireworks reached a revenue of $400 million in 2022.
