Hello,

What are your go-to remedies for a resistor that heats up just too dang fast?

I'd welcome all thoughts.

Thanks.

Hello,

What is the circuit where this resistor is used?
When it heats up very quickly, the power is way to much for the resistor.

first the reason for overheating is because the power reaching the capacitors is somehow higher than expected. second, was your circuit working better before? if yes then test the functionality of other components to ensure they are well.

Several potential remedies can be used to address a resistor that is heating up too quickly:
  1. Reduce the power dissipation: One of the simplest ways to reduce the heat generated by a resistor is to reduce the power dissipation. This can be done by reducing the voltage or current flowing through the resistor or by increasing the resistance value of the resistor.
  2. Increase the thermal mass of the resistor: Increasing the thermal mass of the resistor by using a larger or heavier resistor can help to dissipate heat more effectively.
  3. Use a heat sink: A heat sink can dissipate heat more effectively by increasing the surface area available for heat dissipation.
  4. Add forced air cooling: Adding a fan or other type of forced air cooling system can help to increase the rate at which heat is dissipated from the resistor.
  5. Use a thermal interface material: This can improve the contact between the resistor and the heatsink or other cooling systems.
  6. Change the type of resistor: Some types of resistors, such as wire-wound or metal film resistors, can dissipate heat more effectively than others, such as carbon film resistors.

It is important to note that the specific solution will depend on the application and the specific requirements of the design, so it is a good idea to consult an expert or perform a thermal simulation to optimize the design.
