Texas Instruments to Lay Off 33 at Tucson Area Plant

January 18, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced that it will lay off 33 employees from its Tucson area plant. Affected workers will receive severance packages with at least 60 days' pay and benefits, career transition services, and profit-sharing for 2004. The company will continue to manufacture and test analog products at its Tucson facility.

Company spokesman Brett Schroer stated, "This action was primarily the result of the company's decision to focus a portion of the manufacturing resources in Tucson on new product introduction rather than high-volume manufacturing. Texas Instruments has adjusted its resource requirements accordingly to that strategy."

The Tucson plant specializes in designing and producing high-performance analog semiconductor chips, which are used in a variety of products, including broadband Internet applications, digital cameras, automobiles and other consumer products.
