October 22, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Moltech Power Systems (Gainesville, FL) has launched their nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery solutions for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) and other battery-assisted vehicles. Utilizing high-power, high-drain NiMH technology, Moltech has developed an HEV battery, which they maintain is smaller, lighter and capable of providing comparable power to the HEV batteries already available today.Moltech's HEV battery contains 240 C-sized NiMH cells. The new battery has demonstrated 7,500W continuous power with peak loads of up to 10,000W. Additionally, it delivers 4,400mAh at 20 degrees C. Moltech claims that these C cells provide up to 30 percent more specific power at a 20 percent lighter and smaller size than their leading competitor's battery.Moltech's battery contains SmartShunt battery management electronics by PowerSmart (Shelton, CT) which monitors voltage, temperature, current and current-integration measurements and state-of-charge and battery health information. Moltech is able to work with device manufacturers in order to provide evaluation samples.
