October 24, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCE, Danbury, CT) received an order from PPL Spectrum Inc. (Allentown, PA) for the purchase of a 250kW Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plant slated for installation at the US Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod located in Bourne, MA. The power plant will provide electricity and heating to the base, which includes barracks, hangars and administrative buildings.

The contract was awarded to PPL, which will develop the facility and install the unit. FuelCell Energy will provide the fuel cell power plant that will be owned and operated by the Coast Guard. Other project sponsors include the US Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory, the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust and Keyspan Inc. The project is expected to be installed in the first half of 2002.

"We are very proud to be a part of this forward-looking team to demonstrate that the DFC can provide the secure and reliable power required by our defensive forces,” said Jerry Leitman, FuelCell Energy's president and CEO. “The Coast Guard is looking for a clean and efficient power plant that can enhance the reliability of power at their facilities.”
