American Superconductor (Westborough, MA) has selected Alstom Power Conversion Inc. (Philadelphia, PA) as its subcontractor in a program aimed at designing an ultra-compact high-temperature superconducting (HTS) ship-propulsion motor for the US Navy.

“We believe HTS motors can dramatically enhance the application of electric motors in ship-propulsion systems," said Martin Murphy, vice president of Alstom Power Conversion's marine and offshore business. He continued, “We are delighted to be working with American Superconductor, a world leader in this technology, to rapidly bring HTS ship-propulsion motors into the marketplace."
