July 07, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Renesas Technology Corp. (San Jose, CA), a joint venture between Hitachi Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp., announced the new H8SX/1544F, a 32-bit complex instruction set computer (CISC) microcontroller (MCU) for automotive applications. It is well suited for sophisticated meters and control functions such as high-performance instrumental clusters.

To simplify and improve the design of embedded in-vehicle systems, the 40 MHz device incorporates an enhanced two-channel local area network controller compatible with the controller area network standard, a 512 KB flash memory that can be accessed in one cycle at full clock speed, and a stepping motor control timer with a driver that can drive the motors of up to six gages of meters simultaneously. The MCU also offers many other essential peripheral and communication functions.

Renesas has ongoing plans for advanced semiconductor solutions for automotive in-vehicle control system applications, and the H8SX product line is being extended to meet evolving market needs.

The H8SX/1544F in the 144-pin LQFP is priced at $15.46. Samples will be available August 2005.
