MGE Introduces Power Management Software for Linux

May 22, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

MGE UPS Systems announced the availability of the first Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) power management solution fully based on open source code. As the initial author and editor of the power industry's standards effort, MGE's developers are active in the open source community and have developed a comprehensive standard and clean USB support for UPSs with Linux/Unix operating systems. MGE is an OpenSource-friendly company as all product specifications are released under GPL v2 for easy and clean implementation by important members of the community such as universities.

MGE's Personal Solution Pac 3.0 for Linux is designed for local PC and server applications, giving users information on important parameters such as power consumption and remaining battery life. Because knowing the status of the UPS battery is critical for system uptime, Personal Solution-Pac 3.0 includes an intuitive screen that displays remaining battery backup time available. This real-time indicator works in conjunction with a power consumption sensor that detects how much of the UPS's rated power is being used by connected equipment. As a result, users can avoid one of the most common problems with distributed UPS installations because the system lets the user know whether additional devices can be safely plugged into the UPS without overloading the system.

Through an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), the software gives users a real-time view of their on-site power quality and the ability to set-up automatic actions in case of a power emergency. For example, users can define specific conditions under which the software can conduct an automatic shutdown of a PC or server at the end of battery runtime or send an alert to notify users of power problems.

For ease in communicating with connected devices, Personal Solution-Pac 3.0 automatically detects USB or serial connections. The software instantly avoids communication conflicts by automatically detecting available communication ports. In addition, manual controls enable administrators to customize communication configurations. For added manageability, the software can also remotely control UPS outlet receptacles through secured commands. By programming the UPSs "PowerShare" outlets, users can easily assign maximum backup time to the most critical devices. During a power outage, the UPS will automatically shed non-critical devices such as ink jet printers to provide maximum battery time to the PC workstation or server.
