Avago Tech Expands Gate Drive Optocoupler Family For Industrial Inverters & Power Management Applications

August 26, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

Avago Technologies announced the latest additions to its intelligent gate drive optocoupler product family. Avago’s ACPL-333J and ACPL-330J series of high-speed IGBT optocouplers are said to be easy-to-implement in industrial inverter and power management applications, such as isolated IGBT/power MOSFET gate drives, ac and brushless dc motor drives, industrial inverters and uninterruptible power supplies.

Avago’s ACPL-333J and ACPL-330J, which offer 2.5 and 1.5A output current respectively, are described as advanced high-speed, easy-to-use intelligent gate drivers that help to make IGBT fault protection compact and affordable. Available in a stretched outline-16 (SO-16) package, these new optocouplers are said to provide space and cost savings in designs, and meets minimum 8mm creepage and clearance requirements.

Avago claims that the highly integrated ACPL-333J and ACPL-330J intelligent gate drivers help to improve precision and efficiency of motor inverters by featuring Active Miller Clamp, integrated Vce desaturation detection, under voltage lockout protection, soft shut down, isolated fault feedback and automatic fault reset. Active Miller clamping eliminates the need for a negative gate drive, saving negative power supply and printed circuit board space. Moreover, Avago’s new gate drive optocouplers are said to offer superior CMR performance and a wide operating temperature range. The ACPL-333J is CSA, UL1577 and IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-2 approved. The ACPL-330J is pending approval for CSA, UL1577 and IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-2.

Based on 10,000 piece quantities, the ACPL-333J is priced at $3.38 each. The ACPL-330J is priced at $2.81 each.
