750W/1000W Conduction-Cooled Power Supplies for Industrial Systems

March 04, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Mean Well unveiled the UHP series of fanless conduction-cooled power supplies. The company designed the 750W/1000W UHP series with silicone potting compound. With the release of the UHP-750 (750W) and UHP-1000 (1000W) series, Mean Well expands to higher power coverage. The company created the UHP-750 series and UHP-1000 series for applications in a wide variety of environments.

According to the company, the fanless and semi-potted design solves the customer's issues regarding fan failures. The UHP-750/1000 are suitable for industrial control systems, electromechanical industry, and communication apparatuses that require high performance, small form factor, and fanless operations.

Some equipment requires an uninterrupted operation and can be installed in difficult-to-access locations. A number of applications even install external monitors for fans, thus increasing the design complexity and cost.

Both the UHP-750 and UHP-1000 utilize a fanless design that is semi-potted with top-grade silicone gel. The company notes that the potting procedure also includes extra steps to prevent air bubbles and to ensure the silicone gel perfectly fills the space beneath the PCB and components.

Mean Well also says that although these extra steps increase the production time and cost, the prevention of air bubbles ensures the best production consistency and thermal conduction performance.

Fanless design can also resolve fan noise level problems, thus making the UHP series suitable for environments that require quiet operation.

UHP-750/1000 provides multiple cooling options so customers can flexibly design-in the power supplies based on their system's needs.

The cooling options include either mounting the power supplies on a 450mm x 450mm x 3mm metal plate or adding external fans to cool the units, thereby allowing the power supplies to output at the maximum rated wattage levels.

If restricted by space limitations, the UHP-750/1000 can still output up to 70% of the maximum rated power thanks to the high efficiency of 96% as well as superior mechanical designs.

The multiple cooling options, allow the seamless integration of the UHP-750/1000 into all kinds of application environments.

The UHP-1000 is equipped with Programmable Voltage (PV) and Programmable Current (PC) functions. By applying external dc signal voltages, the output voltage can be modulated between 50% to 120% of the rated voltage, and the output current can be modulated between 20% to 100% of the rated current. The PV and PC functions allow the UHP-1000 to power different types of loads and to satisfy different control requirements, thus making it suitable for powering burn-in equipment, charging stations, and laser systems.

Other key features of the UHP-750/1000 include: compliance to the EN60335-1 household safety standard, which is uncommon for such high-power products; wide operating temperature range of -30°C to +70°C, which allows unrestrained use in extreme temperature environment; low-profile design with only 41mm height, which reduces the difficulty of mounting the power supply into the end equipment.
