March 14, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

ST Assembly and Test Services (STATS, Singapore) has been selected by NEC Corp. (Japan) for a three-year manufacturing agreement to provide full turnkey test and assembly services for its integrated circuits in hard disk drives. The agreement is expected to generate about $20.0 million for STATS over the next three years. STATS reports that the contract will make it one of the key suppliers for NEC's outsourced hard disk drive business.

“We're extremely pleased to be working with NEC, one of the world's top semiconductor companies, particularly as Japanese IDMs are known for their high standard of quality and manufacturing practices," said Tan Bock Seng, chairman and CEO of STATS. “We have technical personnel both in Singapore and in Japan supporting NEC and ensuring all their specifications are met."
