LADWP and FuelCell Energy to Dedicate Power Plant

March 12, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and FuelCell Energy Inc. (Danbury, CT) announced plans to dedicate an ultra-clean, fuel cell power plant for Los Angeles on March 14, 2003. The John Ferraro Building fuel cell power plant will generate 250kW of ultra-clean electricity for Los Angeles; enough power to serve 250 households.

Using state-of-the-art technology, the plant generates its own hydrogen from natural gas, then combines it with oxygen to create electricity and heat. Because there is no combustion, the fuel cell produces significantly less pollutants and is twice as energy efficient as a conventional fossil fuel power plant. The model is a DFC300A(R), manufactured by FuelCell Energy.
