September 03, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Honda Motor Co. (Tokyo) unveiled a new Civic subcompact model equipped with a gas engine and electric motor that enables drivers to travel much farther on the same amount of gasoline. The vehicle runs on both gas and electricity, recharging itself while it's moving, and uses gas as fuel.

The hybrid Civic, which goes on sale in Japan this fall and next spring in the US, gets more than 68mpg. Honda did not give a price on the hybrid Civic.
