Intersil Intros PowerNavigator GUI Enhancements and ZL8101 PWM Controller

March 14, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corporation will introduce its latest version of the proven, popular PowerNavigator digital design system at the IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference as well as the ZL8101 digital power management solution. Intersil will also highlight its new ISL8225M dual 15-amp power module in a multi-phase current-sharing demonstration capable of delivering up to 90 amps output current with no fans or heat sinks.

The PowerNavigator GUI offers a single software platform for all PMBus-enabled power management products at Intersil, meeting user requirements from system design to implementation. PowerNavigator digital power development software system, featuring an intuitive graphical user interface with power-centric intelligence that simplifies complexity and saves designers days of development time compared with analog power design solutions. It can monitor large systems through dashboard views, allows for easy debugging during prototyping, and provides comprehensive visualizations and power-centric intelligence such as sequencing and fault management.

Configuration and setup of the entire power system using Intersil PMBus products lets designers architect their systems at the beginning of a project before hardware is committed, saving time and cost. System-level project files allow the entire power system to be configured simultaneously eliminating the need for multiple files, enabling collaborative sharing and debugging across multiple locations and a seamless transition to the production environment.

The Intersil ZL8101 is an adaptive digital dc-dc pwm controller with auto compensation that provides a single buck output with currents up to 50A. Designed to work with an external driver and with DrMOS solutions, it can be used as a flexible building block for 12V and 5V down conversion or paralleled for current sharing with multiple ZL8101 devices in high-current designs. The ZL8101 is targeted at applications where size, efficiency and monitoring are critical. The ZL8101 uses a dedicated, optimized state machine for generating precise PWM pulses and a proprietary MCU for set-up and optimization.

By automatically compensating the power supply, designers using the ZL8101 can save weeks of design time and significantly improve reliability in a wide range of applications by relieving designers of the need for special tools, knowledge or experience to optimize performance. It extends Intersil’s global leadership in digital power management technology, and is ideal for wired and wireless systems, data communications, and power supply applications. The ZL8101 is available now in QFN-32 packages, with prices starting at $3.10 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

The ISL8225M is a 30A fully encapsulated power module, and is being adopted in a variety of applications. The module can deliver up to 100W output power from a small 17mm square PCB footprint, and simplifies the design of a high-performance board-mounted power supply. Only a few external components are needed to create a dense and reliable power solution.
