NPS Awarded On-Site CHP Power System Project

June 01, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Northern Power Systems Inc. (NPS, Waitsfield, VT), a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp., has been selected by SC Johnson to engineer, build and commission a $6 million turnkey combined heat and power (CHP) system that will provide critical load support for manufacturing operations at the company's Waxdale Plant in Racine, WI.

Major components of the new Northern system include a Solar Centaur 40 gas turbine/generator, a heat recovery steam generator, a gas compressor system, proprietary microprocessor-based controls, power distribution equipment required for the cogeneration system loads, and a 4,750 ft² building to house all major equipment. The system's combustion turbine generators interface with the building electrical services/utility and deliver steam to the plant. Recovery of heat from the generator exhausts will produce about 19,000lbs/h of plant steam.
