Ericsson Opens New Design Center in China

February 12, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Ericsson Power Modules AB (Sweden) announced that it is opening a new design center in Shanghai, China, to be located at the company’s Chinese manufacturing plant. Initially, the new department will focus on supporting products that are manufactured at the Chinese plant.

The Chinese design department aims to obtain the same results as the design center in Kalmar that has succeeded in increasing production yield and in reducing product cost. A team of electrical engineers, which began working at the design center in February, will visit the Kalmar plant during spring of 2004 as part of the internal training to get a deeper understanding of the way of work at the Swedish plant.

Ericsson feels that it is important to have a close co-operation between the production unit and the design department, as closeness in location is a crucial factor for easy communication between production, sourcing and design. The new design center will be deeply involved in sourcing issues. The new design center will also increase product knowledge in all departments within the plant.
