ON Semi Intros NCP1550 DC/DC Controller

October 07, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

ON Semiconductor LLC (Phoenix, AZ) introduced the NCP1550, a micro-powered, high switching frequency, step-down voltage regulation controller designed for PDAs, camcorders, digital still cameras, distributed power systems and computer peripherals.

The NCP1550 has an input-voltage range of 2.4V to 5.5V and can operate directly from a one-cell, lithium-ion battery or a three-cell nickel-metal hydride battery. The output-voltage options range from 1.8V to 3.3V. When designed into a power supply system using appropriate external, p-type MOSFETs, the NCP1550 step-down dc/dc controller can provide up to 2A loading current with high conversion efficiency. The device runs in pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode at 600kHz during normal operation, ensuring a low output ripple noise at heavy output loads of 50mV, typical. The controller automatically switches to pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) mode at low loads to provide a higher efficiency. The PWM/PFM control scheme optimizes overall efficiency for both normal and standby operating modes and extends battery life.

The NCP1550 is available in the compact TSOP-5 package. It is priced at $0.55 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
