ACS Motion Control Expands Integrated Modular Control System To Include 9 and 11" Modules

July 20, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

ACS Motion Control announced that it has expanded its configurable machine and motion control product offering to include 9 and 11" enclosures for two-to-four axes. Designated the MC4U 9" and MC4U 11", the control systems integrate controllers, drives, power supplies and additional I/O and networking capabilities to provide what is described as complete control of machine automation functions – motion, logic, power and data.

The MC4U 9" rack interfaces with four encoder feedbacks, has a single HSSI channel, a single RS232 communication port and two Ethernet ports. In addition, it provides ±10V drive commands for two external drives. The MC4U 11" rack interfaces with four encoder feedbacks, has two HSSI channels, a single RS232 communication port and two Ethernet ports.

The racks feature ACS’ SPiiPlus 3U or SPiiPlus 3U-LT motion controllers, PSM3U-48V-0.76kW or PSM3U-320V-8kW power supplies, and DDM3U-1-320V-5A/10A/20A or DDM3U-2-320V-5A/10A/20A drives.

The modules can be ordered in two ways. A fast prototype for low volume requirements consists of standard plug-in components, mating motherboards (back panels), external network components, standard rack mount enclosure, front access panel/rack-mount and a delivery time of one to two weeks after receipt of order (ARO), thus shortening the applications time to market.

Designed for panel or rack mounting, all connections are accessible from the front, making the MC4U configurable any number of ways to meet exact customer specifications. The MC4U also features logic control with OpenPLC standard IEC 61131-3 PLC control and communications for data management with two Ethernet ports.

The MC4U system is said to integrate robust and reliable power supplies designed specifically for the MC4U system; high-performance PWM drive blocks featuring digital current loop control for smooth constant velocity; linear drives that eliminate jitter; and three-phase motor filters that increase motor functionality by reducing the common mode and the differential mode noise; to provide what is described as a low-noise, low-position jitter and low-cost motion control solution.
