AC-DC Consumer Growth Up, Computers and Communications Down

March 16, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Darnell Group Inc.'s Twelfth Edition analysis of "External AC-DC Power Supplies: Worldwide Forecasts" is an in-depth analysis detailing the latest developments in this important market. The external ac-dc power supply market is projected to see considerable growth over the next five years, with the dollar market increasing from $10.9 billion in 2016 to $15.3 billion by 2021, a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1%. Forecasts in this report include a number of developments occurring in new areas of opportunity such as the emergence of wireless charging and LED lighting, as well as in traditional areas including communications, computers, industrial, and so on.

“Projections for the communications and computer segments have been revised downward since the last edition. Despite this, both of these markets are projected to remain large and present manufacturers with opportunities over the forecast period. Dominated by lower-wattage power supplies used in the mobile phone industry, the communications segment will maintain the largest unit market in this report. As a result of the high level of commoditization for mobile phone power supplies, this segment will also record the lowest per unit average selling price,” commented Richard Ruiz, Analyst at Darnell and author of the report.

Ruiz continued: “Despite a projected slowdown in the demand for tablets, ultrabooks and notebooks over the next several years, the computer segment is projected to maintain the largest dollar market over the forecast period. In contrast, external ac-dc power supplies used in the Consumer segment, including wireless charging, are projected to exceed earlier forecasts and make up one of the fastest growing unit and dollar market in this report, providing a significant opportunity for manufacturers.

“However, despite its large size, the consumer segment will continue to be one of the least attractive areas for power supply manufacturers as it consists largely of highly commoditized lower-wattage and inexpensive power supplies. In addition, a large part of this market is captive production and as a result, the power supply market for this segment will make up one of the larger unit markets, while maintaining one of the smaller dollar markets over the forecast period,” concluded Ruiz.

In addition to wireless charging, one of the more dynamic areas in embedded power supplies is the emergence of digital power management and control. Adoption of this technology is one of the most important factors in reducing power consumption and managing growing power complexity in modern electronic systems.

Wattage forecasts presented in this report are based on the external power supply forecasts generated for three of the categories presented: Communications, Computers and Consumer. Applications within these three segments make up over 95.0% of both the unit and dollar markets covered in this report. Interestingly, the lower wattage categories (<5W and 5-10W) presented in this section will make up over 70% of the unit market share throughout the forecast period. However, the dollar market for the higher wattage categories is much more dispersed, with the largest market in the 51-100W range.

This report contains over 55 tables, graphs and illustrations covering the external power supply market for twenty seven applications over four regions: North America, Europe, Asia and the Rest of the World. The focus of this comprehensive analysis is to provide decision makers in manufacturers and operations with a detailed and insightful look at the current and future opportunities in the external power supply market.
