Galaxy Power Offers Libra Series Bus Converters

December 08, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Galaxy Power Inc. (Westborough, MA), a manufacturer of micro-controlled power conversion products, announced its Libra Series of high-efficiency, isolated bus converters as part of its Cool Converter family of dc-dc converters. The Libra Series offers 6:1, 5:1 and 4:1 fixed-voltage conversion ratios in three form factors (eighth-brick, quarter-brick and SIP styles), each with industry-standard footprint and pinout. The input-voltage range is from 40.5 V to 55 V.

Galaxy Power products feature high currents of up to 30 A; high efficiencies of 96% (typical) at a constant switching frequency; a 20 °C to 40 °C thermal margin; an additional 200 ms at startup for a higher current limit into any load; patent-pending gate drive circuits; and excellent parallel operation for increased power.

Available in three package styles of 240 W design eighth bricks , 360 W design quarter bricks , and 360 W design SIPs ,

prototypes are available now, with production in the fourth quarter. Pricing for the eighth bricks is $30 to $34, $40 to $45 for the quarter bricks, and $40 to $45 for the SIPs, all in 1,000-unit quantities based on output current. In addition to the open-frame unit, an SMT heatsink option is offered that enables the unit to run 20 °C to 40 °C cooler.
