Overload Protection in a UPS

I'm wondering if anyone can explain how overload protection works in a UPS? If a UPS gets shorted, how does the protection kick in?

I'm about to embark on a project.

My idea is to use a UPS, and run the DUT board off its battery. I'll then see if that gets shorted. But if it doesn't, the DUT should be safe to connect to wall mains? Right?

Do you think the wall mains are safe? Are you living somewhere you have control over the breakers?

It's been my experience that you just never trust the wall main of an old as heck apartment.

But that's just me.
