Variable Frequency Drive

Here's what i'm working on ...

I'm going to use a 5 horsepower induction motor for a hydraulic press. Every 4 or so minutes, the press will be switched to ON and there will be load. I will then switch it OFF to replace the load.

Will using a variable frequency drive will lower the power consumption of the induction motor?

I don't exactly see an advantage of utilizing a VFD drive for this kind of application ...

If the motor is run at rated speed and voltage, there's no power consumption reduction with VFD.

Established VFD inverters handle reactive motor currents but don't implement PFC.

Here, you have to take harmonic currents into account.
