DC-DC and SMPSs

If the device converts one voltage level to another ... like a DC-DC converter would ... then you would (almost always) classify it as a switched-mode power supply.

I was always taught to refer to them as switched coil converters. Especially when they have more than one conductor.

I can't be the only one to call them this? Right?

I wouldn't say it's common. But I would know what you were referring to if you just said that in conversation.
